Formal Elements
Photographers are usually aware of the ways in which they can create interest in their images beyond the simple fact of the subject. This is what separates good pictures and bad pictures of the same thing. The following list describes some of the abstract elements in any photograph. Below the list is an example of how you can analyse a photograph looking for these things specifically and how this helps to give the image meaning:
Focus: The whole subject is in focus. However, there is a slight softening of the focus towards the bottom of what appears to be the edge of a table top.
Light: A triangular slash of bright sunlight appears in the middle of the image. This is accompanied by bands of light running diagonally across the upper portion of the image. These appear to be gaps in another object out of shot, a fence perhaps.
Line & Shape: There are number of strong lines, mostly straight, although these are complemented by the sweeping curve of the main object which runs from the top right of the image to the bottom right. All of the lines have the geometric quality of man made objects.
Repetition: The shafts of sunlight running across two surfaces create a dramatic rhythm. A number if straight parallel lines are repeated in the composition, like repeated notes or beats in a piece of music.
Space: The space in the image appears quite shallow, tightly constrained by the cropping. We don't the whole of any of the objects and the photographer appears to have been quite close to the subject.
Texture: All of the objects in the image appear smooth. The drama comes from the jagged bursts of light across their surfaces.
Value/Tone: The image contains a range of tones from very dark to very light. There are deep shadows but also mid tones. The photograph is monochrome but has a brownish tint, perhaps caused by the paper the artist has used.

The main formal elements in this photograph are the light, focus, and the shape.Firstly you straight away see a what looks to be a wine bottle with dripping water, but if you "focus" then you see sunlight flashing through. Also tone and texture are key parts because u have the rough sandy rocks and the dark blue skys.

Researching Abstract Photographer's.
Harry Callahan
When i first saw his work i was really interested in the way that the outlines of the image are very outragous and bold, this really work with all his images because you get a detailed picture.I also really like the way the tones and colours of the picture link together so smoothly.Another key thing i love about his photography is the fact that all of his pictures are the same design and the same tones like black white and grey, also they are very imaginative and the way he takes his pictures you can interpret it however broad your imagination is.

This is my favourite picture of Harrys work because you can tell many storys from this one picture which is a great technique to have. Also i love the way the trees stand out in the white background almost has a snowy effect which gives me a christmas and seasonal feeling. The homely feeling of this picture is the reason why i love Callahans pictures, ideas, and designs towards photography.

My photograms.
These were my first initial photograms which started of my path to my final piece. My favourite one was the third one because the outline of all the items are very unique,Also the fade of the tag right in the middle is great because you can see items under neath the tag in different colours.
These pictures were my second lot of photograms,These improved because first i added more interesting items, then i took everything from my first set that i liked and added them in.Then once i had all my items i started to experiment and try new ways, these are my favourite because they have the same items in each but they're positioned in different places which looks like all different pictures.
This is all my pictures combined into my final piece,I really loved all my pictures because I took a new perspective into photograms.I created loads of different and unique photograms by using one idea and inspiring them all into one.Originally i had one photogram and was making random and unplanned photograms, but then i thought maybe i should use the same idea for loads of photograms. So i created one main photogram and created a few which were nice but i wanted more. So Mr Nicholls gave the class the idea of cutting the photo up and stick them together in different ways and sizes and making it your own. Then i ended up with a nice cut up photogram which started my final piece and i ended up with this picture which i am really proud of.
Harry Callahan
Harry Callahan i loved his work because of the dark tones and bright whites in the background of his images. His work instantly stood out to me because of how exact the shapes were.
Ersnt Haas
I loved this pieces of work because they were the opposite to my favourite Harry Callahan, it has vibrant colours and round curves. The best thing in the picture is the way you cant tell what the picture actually is.
Alfred Stieglitz
Alfred Stieglitz work was in a tie with Harry Callahan work and his own because i loved both of them but i didn't not know which was my favourite,So i was looking at the details and colours.I really liked the way all Alfreds work reminded me of a stormy night and dark overpowering clouds which i really liked.
My favourite abstract photographer is Harry Callahan so i thought i would try and master his techniques by trying myself. This was 3 pictures which i thought turned out great, although i don't have the dark tones and bright whites.I have all the shape and texture of the trees which Callahan would have.I really love the picture on the left because it has many trees which is very strong and makes you feel like it is darkening the picture which kind of gives the dark effect that Callahan has in his photo's.
My Evaluation Of Harry Callahan's Work
In this photograph I see tall dark overpowering trees. In a white almost snowy scenery , it gives me a christamas feeling on a late cold night. For this picture i would use words like "snowy" ''cold'' and "mysterious'' these pictures were really fun to create.I was really inspired by the huge trees, this was my main focus in these photos.
Saul Leiter
Photoshoot.
In these photos i was trying to portray the topic of reflections and shadows.
My Final Piece
I was really proud of my final piece because I managed to involve all my pictures into one final idea. Also I really liked the way that it had most of the tones and colour which compliments the piece as a whole. My top left picture was inspired by Saul Leiter this was my favourite picture because it is heavily influenced by Saul Leiter. Although I loved that picture i really enjoyed the reflections and shadows of the picture underneath. There is so much going on in one picture which i really enjoy. From this topic I learnt how easy it is to try and interpret other artist work. Also it is a really good technique to know how to inspire lots of work into your own.
